Tribute to Carlos Martinez

My name is Robert Long. I live in Catalan wine country outside Barcelona. I first met Carlos in 2004 when our mutual friend (and his agent) Joyce Phillips recommended me as a director for a new show he was creating with the German theologian, TV host, and writer Andreas Malessa, “Still und Stark”, which alternated storytelling and mime, a wonderful contrast of voice and silence. We rehearsed both in Barcelona and Esslingen and Carlos brought me to Germany for the premiere in 2005. And that was “the beginning of a beautiful friendship” and working relationship. In the last 20 years working with Carlos on many of the shows in his extensive repertoire has been a joyous, mostly effortless experience, full of surprises, humor, and the generous sharing of the creative process.  Carlos always manages to shape poignant stories whose images remain on the retina, with messages that resound authentic and stay in the heart.

Of the many special moments that come to mind, including Carlos performing in a theater fest in my town in Catalonia or working hard together to develop a show for the Red Cross or sharing the excitement of his performance of Mimologos in Barcelona, our stint in Paris in 2017 to develop the show called "Klassisch!" stands out as unique. Along with his closest collaborator Jenny Findeis and his eternal friend and agent Jean-Daniel von Lerber we were the guests in the loft of the gracious and talented Shani Diluka, the renowned classical pianist who joined forces with Carlos to create an exquisite dramaturgy.  She even cooked for us!

We’ll always have Paris…
